While searching the web for min/mi to MPH conversions, I came across an interesting chart. We all know that running on a treadmill with 0% incline is easier than running outside. After all, there’s no wind resistance if you aren’t the thing moving. But have you ever stopped to think “How much easier is it?” I know I never had. Then I saw this chart and noticed that it is about :20/mi easier. Meaning if you are running an 8:00/mi on the treadmill, you will probably run around an 8:20/mi at the same exertion level outside.

I never imagined that it would be a significant amount like that. Check out the chart if you’re running regularly on a treadmill and trying to hit specific paces. It is pretty eye-opening, I think.
You can find it HERE.
In contrast, one could also argue that a treadmill is boring and it is harder to hit paces and distances because it is tougher mentally.

Great chart! Thanks.
Oh Crap. I'm slower than I thought.
I never run at less than a 2 incline on my mill because anything less feels like I'm running downhill. It is significantly easier.
I always learned in my coaching classes to set the treadmill at 1% to mimic what true outdoor pace really is. So that's what I do whenever I do speedwork on my treadmill.
