Anticipation of Summer

Yes. Definitely over-trained. I think that all marathon training programs are designed to do that to you though. With two weeks before the taper (a drastic decrease in miles to help you rest for the big day, three weeks from the 'thon), I can honestly say that this training plan has done it's job. WOW. Pooped out. :) One more run this week, a 14 miler, and I'm done.

A few days to rest up and then Matt and I kick off our backpacking season! WOO!! :) During the winter, we hike or ski to DNR owned cabins. They come with a wood stove, outhouse, and usually firewood nearby that can be cut as needed. You can go out on hikes comfortably to -20F and then come to the warm cabin to warm up. Backpacking season means breaking out the tent and sleeping on the ground. We have sleeping bags that keep us warm up to about 5 or 10 degrees F, so it's all good if you figure out a way to hide in the bag, head and all. Any escaping appendages would surely freeze off if left out alone all night. With that said, sleeping isn't the problem: It's staying warm during the day. Since highs are in the 30s (lows still near 10), it isn't too hard. Easy hiking will definitely work. We're planning on a base camp at the entrance of Denali Park, and then hiking in the park and returning at night to our tent and campfire. (Fires aren't allowed in the park)

Since Matt and I are going to the "outside" on April 30 and he has only one day off between this weekend and our trip, it will be our only springtime trip. Breakup in the mountains is nothing but slush, mud, and ice--so it really is the perfect time to go away. When we return, it'll be dry, and we'll adventure ourselves silly all summer, to which point we'll be begging for winter to come so we can rest. :) That's how the last two summers have been anyways. Anybody want to come visit? We'll run you ragged with panoramic mountain trips, glaciers, and grizzly animals knocking on the tent door---then send your collapsed body back on the airplane home.
